A Guide to Discord's Nitro File Limits
Discord Nitro boosts your upload limit from 8 MB to 500 MB. That's a 62x increase—enough for full-length videos, high-quality screen recordings, and large game clips. But is Nitro worth it just for file uploads? And when does compression still make sense?
Free vs. Nitro: The Numbers
Free Discord users can upload files up to 8 MB. Nitro ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) raises that to 500 MB. Nitro Basic ($2.99/month) does not increase the file limit—it's still 8 MB. So if file size is your main concern, only full Nitro helps.
When Nitro Makes Sense
If you're a content creator, streamer, or someone who regularly shares long-form video, Nitro saves time. You can upload a 200 MB highlight reel without compressing. For most casual users, though, 8 MB is enough for quick clips—and compression is free. A 30-second clip compressed to 8 MB often looks nearly identical to the original for Discord's purposes.
Compression as an Alternative
Even with Nitro, compression can be useful. A 500 MB file takes longer to upload and download. Compressing to 50 MB preserves quality while speeding up transfer. And if you're sharing with friends who don't have Nitro, they can't download files over 8 MB—so keeping clips smaller ensures everyone can access them.
